May 7/8: Get Ho, Get Lei'd (Middlebury, VT)

Derek Hodgson's comments: VT was good. The tournament was at a good level, however it would have been nice if the teams were more committed. We showed up on Saturday and started warming up at 8:30 to an emtpy field. We eventually started at 9:30, but alas the first team that we were against only had four people. So we divided up the team and did a friendly scrimmage. This was probably the worst thing that could have happened. The next game was against a good opponent, who had already played a game, and were more into the tournament than we were. They jumped out to a huge lead in the first have, and we traded points in the second half. The third game we played another 'fun/drunk' team, and we came out hot, jumping to a quick lead. We then relaxed and let the team back into it. After a timeout to refocus we finished them off. Next was a hotly contested affair against a college team. We were starting to click a lot more, and you could see the team gelling as the game went on. I believe we lost by 2, it was a good close to a day where not many of us had played together before.

Sunday was disappointing at the begining, as we arrived to the field at 9:00 to start our warm-up for our 9:30 game. Anywho, similar to Saturday, we were sitting there waiting for people to show up. We finally started at 10:30. There was a crazy amount of wind all day, our first game had the wind blowing across the field. The other team jumped out to a 3-1 lead, then we clicked in to lead 4-3. After a few long points, time cap was called when the other team was up 7-5. seVen dug in hard and pulled out the 9-8 win. It was a fantastic finish, and showed the potential of the team. Our next and final match was against Camelot (Montreal). This time the wind was coming straight down the field. We lost the toss, so they picked the up wind side. Typical scoring in this game 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, but then the D line got an up wind point with great work playing through their 5-person cup. So we were up two. Some missed plays gave Camelot 3 chances to score from our redzone, and they finally did on there third attempt. Cap was called when the score was 7-6 for them. So it was 8-8 and we pulled to them, got the D, worked the disc well, there was a cheap call made when a guy stripped the disc from me, and fouled me, after I skied him. So it went back to the thrower, and there was eventually a turn, and they took the game 9-8. At that point in time, seVen called it a weekend, considering we were losing people with injuries. The worst being Pat with a seperated shoulder on a spectacular laout D.

All in all, I thought the tournament was good. The fields were great, it is just a shame that people didn't really show up on time. The weather could have been better too, it was a little chilly on the Sunday games. But what did we expect, it was the first weekend of May. I was just thankful that the rain stayed away

Tournament MVP: Matt Scase for outstanding movement with the disc.
Honourable mention: Batch for his defensive layouts! I think he got the most Lei's out of all of us.
