Seven at UPA Sectionals (Upstate NY)

seVen travelled to Geneva, NY yesterday (Sept 25th) to compete in the Upstate NY UPA Sectionals. Despite losing a few players (Ali, Evan, and Katie) days before the tournament, Luke forgetting his cleats in his car in Ottawa, Pat waking up late (surprise, surprise) when he was driving from Ottawa that morning, and various on-line mapping tools (yahoo, mapquest, maptuit) giving us incorrect directions, we managed to make it to Seneca Lake State Park to play a couple of games of Ultimate.

Here is the team that we brought:
Guys: Pat, Geofford, Budgell, Glenn, Batch, Luke, Keith, and last minute addition of Adam
Gals: Julie, Deb, Nat, Tina, Melody

The tournament schedule was quite nice, if you won both of your games then you qualified, and if you lost one of the two first games, then you had the opportunity by playing a third game to qualify in the 2nd spot. If you lost both of your games, then you were out. seVen went with a mission to only play 2 games.

There were four teams, and here were how they were initially ranked:

1- SeVen (Ottawa)
2- Vitamin I (Ithica)
3- Little Lebowski Urban Achievers (Albany)
4- Tempest (Albany)

The first games were seVen vs Tempest and Vitamin I vs LLUA.

Fortunately for us, the tournament was running a little bit behind as the directions that were given by mapquest and yahoo were wrong. So some of our players got to the fields after the orginal startime.

Our first game was against Tempest - a team that we knew nothing about. So we decided to stick to our game plan and just play ultimate. After a marathon point where they decided to zone us, but after that they didn't play zone again...the final score was:
seVen 12 - Tempest < 12

Our second game was against the Achievers (aka LLUA). This team had just beat Vitamin I the 2nd Ranked team, and they looked like they were ready to fight for the top seed. We had decided as a team that we only wanted to play 2 games and since we had won our first game, we had to win this one as well. Highlights from this game include, Luke trying to throw a Greatest, Keith laying out for everything, Budgell and Glenn connecting for some fast points, and many others that I can't think of right now. The final score of this game was a little closer than we would have liked, but it was:
seVen 11 - LLUA 9

So this put seVen as top seed out of Upstate NY and this means that we are going to Devens, MA for the NorthEast Regional tournament Oct 9-10th. There are 6 regions with 16 bids for Mixed so I'm not sure how many each region gets...

On another note, seVen has kept or beaten it's seed at every tournament that we have entered, so that is pretty good. Hopefully we can continue this trend :)

Seven at Spirit

Thanks to the Seven Spirit team for an awesome finish to a windy, windy day. For those of you who weren't there - we lost by 2 points to Lunchbox in the final. It will be televised on Rogers at some point in time. Everyone played awesome except me because I was on the sideline with a stupid shoulder injury. Fortunately we were able to add Miriam, Alex and Anne (the two latter girls were from O.J. and they were a great addition to the team despite their reservations before the game that they couldn't play at this "level") to help out our girl situation as we were down to three after Kindha had to leave and then two when I went down with injury. Sully and Nat Masse played an amazing day of ultimate. The guys: Pat, Geofford, Evan, Luke, Denis and Jon Roch played awesome all day, and finally our 7th guy Dave Milks showed up at the final when he was supposed to be there all day.

The results of the day:
Game # 1: Lunchbox 4 vs seVen 3
Game # 2: Weapons 4 vs seVen 10
Game # 3: Rajin 0 vs seVen 8
Game # 4: Oddjob 2 vs seVen 12
Semi-final: Oddjob lost to seVen (can't remember the score)

Final: Lunchbox beat seVen by 2 points (can't remember the score)
